In support of those living with HIV and to remember those who have sadly lost their lives to the disease, many famous landmarks across the region will glow red on 1 December to mark World AIDS Day.
There are around 1,800 people living with HIV in the North East, with 142 new cases diagnosed last year. One in six of these cases were seen in people over 50.
Although advancements in treatment mean people with HIV now have a near normal lifespan, early diagnosis is key. You can get tested in a number of places, including your GP practice and sexual health clinics. You can find your local HIV testing service on NHS Choices.
