Making it easier to see a GP in North Tyneside

It will be easier to see a GP in North Tyneside in future, thanks to a new scheme to offer extra appointments during afternoons, early evenings and weekends. The extra investment by NHS North Tyneside CCG will provide more than 1,000 extra GP appointments every week.

That means it will be easier to get both same-day and routine appointments with a GP in North Tyneside – including a number of evening and weekend appointments for people who find it difficult to attend during the day. This will be particularly useful for people who are self-employed, who work away or whose shift pattern makes it difficult to get away during work.

The scheme will start operating on a limited scale from 1 September, with the number of appointments increasing during October and November.

When fully operational, the scheme will offer appointments at existing GP surgeries at Battle Hill, the Oxford Centre, Shiremoor Resource Centre, and North Shields practices, so that patients can see a GP close to home.

The service will be provided by local GPs, with support from TyneHealth, the GP federation which includes all 29 practices in the area.

It’s all part of North Tyneside CCG’s Future Care vision for the future of local health and care services. Over the coming years, Future Care will mean easier access to GP services, a new, single urgent care centre for the whole of North Tyneside and improved healthcare support for frail elderly patients.

To arrange an appointment, simply phone your practice in the usual way. Outside normal opening hours, patients can call NHS 111 instead.
